Drawings
Each drawing is a development of my own visual language. My visual language is an expression of non-conceptual knowledge; a way to express the unknown or what I can't express through concepts, language or ideas. It is an embodied knowing that manifests itself on the page. My 'knowing' or conscious part of my mind is asked to step aside and allow this other aspect of myself to 'speak'. Generally this part has been silenced and obscured, and needs to be consciously allowed to emerge in a free and open space. Words or something I am struggling with often is the beginning of the drawing, but then I let my body take over and just do its thing without repression or judgement. This type of practice is liberating and always a surprise. I am not looking to produce a 'good' drawing or even care if I like it or not in an aesthetic sense. The feeling of surprise, liberation and discovering something unknown to the conscious me is the point of the practice. Later, I use the shapes, forms, and sensations that are generated in other aspects of my art - sculpture, video, collage, installation and painting.
